There is a point at which repairing an old boiler stops being economical. Working out where that point sits is the difference between a sensible investment and money wasted, in either direction.

When does replacement make more sense than repair?

There is no single rule, but the following combination usually settles it. If several of these apply, replacement is likely the better value decision:

  • Age. Boilers beyond roughly 12 to 15 years are approaching the end of their economic life.
  • Frequent breakdowns. Two or more faults in a year, each with a call-out and parts, adds up quickly.
  • Rising heating costs. An older non-condensing appliance is meaningfully less efficient than a modern one.
  • Parts becoming difficult to source. Once a model is obsolete, repairs get slower and more expensive.
  • Poor efficiency. Long warm-up times, uneven heating, or a boiler that runs constantly.
  • Safety concerns. Any sign of a leak, corrosion on the case, or a failed flue check.

A single fault on an eight-year-old boiler with available parts is usually worth repairing. Three faults in eighteen months on a fifteen-year-old appliance usually is not.

Upgrade options at replacement

Replacement is the natural moment to fix things that have annoyed you for years. Because the system is being drained and worked on anyway, several improvements cost far less now than they would as a separate job:

  • Moving the boiler out of a cupboard or kitchen into a more sensible position
  • Converting from a regular boiler to a combi to reclaim cylinder and loft space
  • Adding modern or smart heating controls and thermostatic radiator valves
  • Fitting a magnetic filter to protect the new appliance
  • Power flushing a system that has never been cleaned

We will price these separately so you can see exactly what each adds and decide what is worth doing.

Safety comes first

If we find anything unsafe during the assessment, such as a damaged flue, evidence of spillage, or an unsafe gas installation, we will tell you immediately and explain your options. Gas work is not an area for postponement.

Where existing gas pipework needs upgrading to meet current regulations or the appliance manufacturer’s requirements, that work is identified at survey and quoted separately rather than sprung on you later.

Frequently asked questions

Should I repair or replace my boiler?

As a rule of thumb, if the boiler is over 12 years old, has broken down more than once recently, and the repair is a significant fraction of a replacement, replacement is usually better value. We will give you a straight answer after assessing it.

How much does boiler replacement cost?

From £1,650 + VAT for a straightforward like-for-like swap. Conversions, relocations and system upgrades are quoted after survey.

How disruptive is a boiler replacement?

You will be without heating and hot water for the working day. We protect floors and work areas and clear up afterwards. Making good decorative finishes is not included unless specifically quoted.

Can you replace my boiler with a combi?

Often yes, but it depends on your mains water pressure and hot water demand. If a combi would not serve your household well we will say so rather than fit one anyway.
