New boilers from £1,650 + VAT

  • Gas Safe registered
  • 12-month workmanship guarantee
  • Clear written quotations

Not everyone with an ageing boiler is shopping for a replacement. Plenty of people are simply wondering whether upgrading would be worth it, whether a modern appliance would actually cut their heating bills enough to justify the outlay.

This page answers that honestly, including the cases where upgrading is not the priority.

What’s included

  • Assessment of your current boiler's efficiency and condition
  • Realistic view on what an upgrade will and will not change
  • Written quotation for the recommended work
  • New boiler supply and installation
  • System cleanse and magnetic filter
  • Modern controls where beneficial
  • 12-month workmanship guarantee

What upgrading actually changes

The meaningful difference is condensing technology. An older non-condensing boiler sends hot flue gases outside and loses that heat entirely. A modern condensing boiler recovers a good deal of it, which is why the efficiency gap between a twenty-year-old appliance and a current one is substantial rather than marginal.

If your existing boiler predates around 2005, an upgrade will almost certainly reduce your gas consumption. If it is a modern condensing boiler that is only eight years old and working properly, the efficiency gain will be small and an upgrade is harder to justify on running costs alone.

Upgrade the controls, not just the boiler

One of the most cost-effective upgrades has nothing to do with the boiler. Heating controls, meaning a decent programmable thermostat, thermostatic radiator valves on every radiator, and correct zoning, change how much heat you actually use.

A modern boiler with a single old-fashioned on/off timer and no TRVs will not perform anywhere near its potential. If your budget is limited, upgrading controls on a boiler that still has life in it is often better value than replacing a serviceable appliance.

What an upgrade will not fix

It is worth being clear about the limits. A new boiler will not:

  • Fix cold spots in radiators caused by system sludge, which needs cleaning
  • Improve poor mains water pressure
  • Compensate for inadequate insulation
  • Make undersized radiators heat a room properly

Where any of these apply, we will tell you, because fitting a new boiler onto an underlying problem produces a disappointed customer and, in the case of contaminated system water, can affect the manufacturer warranty.

Is now the right time?

Upgrading makes most sense when the existing boiler is already showing its age, with occasional faults, slow warm-up, noisy operation, rather than after a catastrophic failure in mid-January. Planned work is cheaper, calmer and lets you choose the appliance rather than take whatever is available.

If your boiler is over twelve years old and has needed attention recently, planning an upgrade now is usually the better decision.

Frequently asked questions

Will a new boiler save me money?

If you are replacing an older non-condensing boiler, yes. The efficiency difference is real and should show in your gas use. If your current boiler is a relatively modern condensing model in good order, the saving will be modest.

Should I upgrade my controls too?

Often this is the best-value part of the job. Thermostatic radiator valves and a good programmable thermostat affect how much heat you use, sometimes more noticeably than the boiler itself.

My boiler still works, should I replace it?

Not necessarily. If it is under about ten years old, serviced annually and running without faults, there is usually no urgency. We will tell you if that is the case.

How much does a boiler upgrade cost?

From £1,650 + VAT for a straightforward replacement. Controls upgrades and system cleaning are quoted separately so you can see what each adds.
