A system boiler works with a pressurised hot water cylinder, storing hot water ready for use rather than heating it on demand. That single difference is what makes it the right answer for busy households.

How a system boiler differs from a combi
A combi heats water as it flows through the appliance. A system boiler heats water and stores it in a pressurised cylinder, ready to be drawn off at mains pressure.
The practical consequence is simultaneous demand. A cylinder holding stored hot water can supply two showers at once without either dropping away, because it is not trying to heat the water in real time. A combi cannot do that.
Unlike an older regular boiler system, a system boiler needs no loft tanks, because the expansion vessel and pump are built into the appliance, so the installation is tidier and the loft stays free.
When a system boiler is the better choice
- Two or more bathrooms, especially where they are used at the same time.
- Larger properties with four or more bedrooms.
- High simultaneous demand, a family where showers, baths and taps overlap.
- Modest mains flow rate. A cylinder buffers this in a way a combi cannot.
- Where an immersion backup is wanted for hot water if the boiler fails.
Trade-offs to consider
A system boiler needs somewhere to put the cylinder, which usually means keeping an airing cupboard. Stored hot water is finite, and a very heavy draw-off can empty the cylinder and you then wait for reheat, though correct sizing at survey makes this rare.
Against that, you get hot water performance that does not collapse when someone else turns a tap on. In a household with two bathrooms, that is usually the deciding factor.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a system boiler and a combi?
A combi heats water on demand with no cylinder. A system boiler heats and stores water in a pressurised cylinder, which handles simultaneous hot water use far better.
Do I need a loft tank with a system boiler?
No. The expansion vessel and pump are built into the boiler, so no loft tanks are required, unlike a traditional regular boiler system.
Can a system boiler run two showers at once?
Yes, provided the cylinder is correctly sized for your household. That sizing is done at survey.
How much does a system boiler installation cost?
From £1,650 + VAT for a like-for-like replacement. Cylinder work or conversion from another system type is quoted after survey.
